Major exodus from Inishowen to Oz 06.11.07

By Liam Porter, Inishowen Independent

TEN YOUNG men from the Muff and Quigley’s Point areas will head off to Australia this week as a major exodus from the peninsula to the land down under continues.
Seven of the young men, all of whom are involved with the Quigley’s Point Swifts Football Club, will leave today while the rest will leave at the weekend.
Young Inishowen men heading in their droves to Sydney. And they are just the latest to pack their bags in recent weeks with several other local clubs also losing young players since the start of the season.
Cockhill Celtic and Clonmany have also lost players since the start of the season while it is understood a number of Redcastle United players have
also made plans to head to Australia early in the new year.
Speaking to the 'Inishowen Independent' yesterday, QPS committee member Terence Hegarty said the loss of so many players would be a big blow to the club who currently sit top of the Inishowen League.
“There is no doubt that the players will be missed and they will be hard to replace but it will give an opportunity to young players in the club to stake a claim for a place in the team.”
It is understood that the young men who have been leaving Inishowen all had work here, but have been attracted by the chance of work in Australia.
“There are a lot of people from Inishowen already out there and the lads are all heading out to people who have things like accommodation already sorted for them.”
The fact that visas are so difficult to obtain for America has also meant that Australia has become a popular choice for the young men, most of whom are able to easily obtain work.
“Nearly everyone is heading out to Sydney and there is a huge Inishowen contingent out there now. By the time the season is over I expect that there will be well over twenty players from various teams in the Inishowen League gone,” Terence said.
