Lucky escape for three Dublin
yachtsmen
18.09.07
Three Dublin yachtsmen
had a lucky escape yesterday after their yacht ran
aground in high winds and rough seas in Lough Swilly. |
|
The men, from the
Malahide area of Co. Dublin, had berthed at Fahan
Marina on Sunday night.
However, they ran into difficulties the following
afternoon as they attempted to sail out of the
Lough. It's understood their 45ft vessel got stuck
after hitting a sandbank at Lisfannon shortly |
before lunchtime. Their
distress call was picked up by Malin Head Coast
Guard who tasked the two Buncrana RNLI vessels to
help them.
All three were unharmed in the incident but had to
wait until the next high tide, around teatime
yesterday, to attempt to free their vessel. They
were once again assisted by the RNLI Lifeboat crews
aboard their inshore and all-weather boats.
Still battling very high, chilly winds and choppy
seas, they worked for more than three hours to free
the yacht. The boat was finally towed to safety at
Fahan Marina around 9pm
RNLI spokesperson Liam Magee said it was a long and
arduous rescue mission in very high winds. "The
important thing is everybody is safe and well," he
said.
