THE construction of a
dual carriageway from Derry to Monaghan is to be
fast-tracked.
The North's Regional Development Minister Conor
Murphy has assured his Sinn Féin colleagues in
Donegal that he is determined to speed-up the
upgrade of the 80km A5 route. |
Cllr. Pádraig MacLochlainn and Senator Pearse
Doherty have both campaigned on the issue at
national and European level.
"We are very encouraged to learn that work has been
continuing apace since the official announcement was
made about the upgrade. |

"Conor Murphy detailed his determination to continue
the fast-track approach to ensure that this major
infrastructural project is brought to fruition in
the shortest possible timeframe," said Cllr.
MacLochlainn.
While the upgrade of the road will be broken up into
three to four stages, work will be undertaken
simultaneously on different stages to ensure a
quicker completion time.
Mr. Murphy is expected to announce the commissioning
of a 'Route Corridor Study' next month to explore
alternative route options for the dual carriageway.
The findings will then be put out to public
consultation.
He will also meet his Dublin counterpart Minister
Noel Dempsey in Enniskillen on September 14.
"We are assured that the A5 dual carriageway issue
will once again be at the top of their joint
ministerial agenda and that the fast-track approach
has the full backing of both the Executive and the
Dublin Government," added Cllr. MacLochlainn. |
