THE Derry Diocese is
mourning the death of Moville-born Reverend Lawrence
Keaveney who died peacefully in Altnagelvin
Hospital, Derry, on Sunday at the age of 84.
Fr. Keaveney was born on August 12th, 1923, and
attended Ballybrack National School and Ballynally
National School.
From there, he went to St. Columb’s College, Derry
and St. Patrick’s College, Maynooth and was ordained
to the priesthood on June 20th, 1948. He celebrated
59 years in ministry earlier this year.
He began his clerical service on a secondment to the
Diocese of Paisley in Scotland. In 1950, he was
appointed to Coleraine where he remained for six
years. From 1956 to 1968 he was curate of Burt,
leaving there to become curate in Killygordan until
1971. From 1971 to 1977 he was curate in Dregish in
the parish of Ardstraw West and Castlederg. He was
appointed parish priest of Coleraine in 1977 and the
following year, was transferred to Iskaheen, Muff as
parish priest. He retired in 1996 to become chaplain
of the Nazareth House, Derry.
His remains were taken from Altnagelvin Hospital on
Sunday to the Nazareth House before being removed to
the home of his sister Mary, at Limefield, Moville.
He will be buried in Ballybrack Cemetery today,
Tuesday, August 28th, 2007, after concelebrated
Requiem Mass at 12 noon in St. Pius X Church,
Moville. |
