SPEEDING on one of
Inishowen’s busiest roads will be a thing of the
past when Gardai shortly take up residence in their
new temporary HQ.
The local force is moving to the former Clubman
Omega factory at Lisfannon while their permanent
station is being built. They expect to be relocated
by early summer.
The premises, now owned by Carlin & McLaughlin
Accountants, are situated on a straight stretch of
the Buncrana to Derry Road.
When the local force takes up residence, it will be
a brazen motorist who’ll risk breaking the speed
limit on the Garda doorstep.
A Garda spokesperson said the officers hoped to be
in their temporary accommodation as early as May.
“Plans have been drawn up for the internal office
space and when all that is done, the move shouldn’t
be much longer after that.”
Meanwhile, it is expected Garda HQ at Ardaravan
Square will be finished by the end of 2008. It will
be a state-of-the-art premises and the most modern
in the country.
Because of legislative changes such as the
Children’s Act, the new station will have a
designated detention area for children and
juveniles.
A sound and vision suite for electronic interviewing
will also be installed.
The imminent exodus of Gardai from their
100-year-old premises at St. Oran’s Road follows a
ballot by officers last year to hold a walkout in
protest at their “dreadful” working conditions. The
walkout, however, was deferred to allow suitable
temporary accommodation be provided. |
