A local priest is
organising a huge Hogmanay celebration for people in
Buncrana and Inishowen with links to Scotland.
And the unique celebration will be held in August -
four months earlier than the traditional Scottish
event - usually held on New Year's Eve.
Fr. Eddie McGuinness said he wanted to recognises
the strong Scottish-Inishowen connection and is
expecting hundreds of people to attend the
forthcoming event.
"There are so many people in this area who have
links to Scotland. They are very involved in the
Church and you can hear the accent everywhere - at
Mass, in Confessions and among the children in the
national schools," said Fr. McGuinness.
"A lot of people from this area emigrated to
Scotland years ago but have now come home to live.
"They might have lived only a couple of streets
apart in Glasgow but now have no way of connecting
with each other. Our Hogmanay night in August will
primarily be a networking opportunity for them."
Fr. McGuinness said he won't be surprised if a
haggis or two turns up for the Hogmanay supper.
Anyone, especially those of Scottish/Irish
extraction, are invited to a meeting at The Lake of
Shadows Hotel on Thursday, May 24th at 8pm. If you
can help or if you have any contacts, ideas or
information, come along to this week's meeting.
