Six elected to new development
company
12.11.07
INISHOWEN'S new funding
and development company has a "huge community
mandate" going forward. |
|
That's according to
IRDL manager Andrew Ward who made his comments in
light of the 94% turnout for the poll on Thursday to
elect six community representatives to sit on the
new board.
The six successful candidates were Laurie McGee and
Seamus Bovaird in East Inishowen; Susan McGonagle
and Gerard Lafferty |
in North Inishowen and
Frances Browne and John McCarter in South Inishowen.
They will take their seats later this month at the
first board meeting of the new company – formed with
the merger of IRDL and Inishowen Partnership
Company.
Of the 206 community groups who registered to vote,
a total of 194 cast their votes on the night. |
Inishowen Partnership
Company manager, Shauna McClenaghan, said the
election was a huge success as an exercise in local
democracy.
“This success underlines the spirit of community
development in Inishowen,” she said. Votes were
counted on Friday by Donegal County Council staff at
Carndonagh Public Services Centre.
The IRDL manager said some people |

travelled 30 miles to
cast their vote. "It is a credit to them and to the
strength of the community infrastructure in
Inishowen that the turnout was so high,” said Mr.
Ward. New board member, Susan McGonagle, said every
one of the 39 groups who said they would vote for
her turned up.
“It is amazing what a community can do when everyone
gets together,” she said. Gerard Lafferty said he
had even drawn votes from outside his own area of
Glengad. He said once on the board, he would work on
developing all the communities he represents.
Meanwhile, Laurie McGee pledged to focus on
improving facilities for local communities and the
elderly while Seamus Bovaird said the six successful
candidates would work together to target funding for
"realistic projects".
