Inishowen a hothouse for
entrepreneurs

DONEGAL has among the
highest concentration of self-employed people in
Ireland, according to a leading entrepreneurship
expert.
Paula Fitzsimons made her comments this week in Burt
at the first ever Regional Enterprise and
Entrepreneurship Conference. |

“There is a vibrant
entrepreneurial culture in Derry, Donegal and across
the North West”, said Ms. Fitzsimons, a former
director of the Global Entrepreneurship Research
Association.
“With an improved support framework for business
start ups and initiatives such as Ireland |
North West, this is a
great time to be developing a business in the
region”.
Buncrana-man David Cullen outlined his recent
experience of leaving a successful job as director
of Lansdowne Market Research in Dublin to move home
and establish his own market research firm,
Outsourced Insight.
“Most of the barriers to doing business from the
North West have been removed and geographic distance
isn’t an issue for any of my clients,” he said,
adding that regular Derry-Dublin flights and ease of
travel to Belfast and London, made a
knowledge-driven business in Inishowen feasible.
Derry woman Judith O’Brien told the seminar how
success with multi-million euro Dublin technology
firm Calyx enabled her to pursue her dream of
starting a high-quality equestrian centre in Malin.
Judith, a director of Calyx, explained: “Malin is
beautiful, but not fully developed in terms of its
tourism potential.
"It’s great to be in a position to invest in the
area particularly at a time when there is so much
entrepreneurial activity in the region”.
The Donegal County Enterprise Board was delighted
with the seminar at An Grianan Hotel and said huge
opportunities now existed for establishing and
growing businesses in the region.
