Donegal jobless rate hits 18% 04.10.07

THE SEANAD is to devote half a day to debating Donegal's unemployment crisis as the level hits 'a stark' 18%.
Senator Pearse Doherty was granted the discussion time yesterday after raising the issue and calling on the Enterprise Minister to address the house on the problem.
“With unemployment at 18%, Government must stop treating the county as an afterthought. Government interdepartmental talking shops are not delivering jobs," said Senator Doherty.
“How will businesses be attracted to Donegal when there is scant infrastructure? For example there are no rail links and patchy broadband coverage."
The Leader of the House, Donie Cassidy agreed to allocate a half day of Seanad time to debate the issue.
Senator Doherty welcomed the allocation, saying: "It is encouraging that during the proposed debate we will also have an opportunity to discuss the IDA’s failure in addressing economic decline in the region.
“However, this debate must deliver results for the people of Donegal. 18% unemployment is a stark figure and, as such, must prompt urgent action by government departments and related agencies.”
