Organisers of the
McGlinchey Summer School in Clonmany have surpassed
themselves again with a packed programme of events
to celebrate their 10th anniversary.
This year's school, entitled 'Inishowen 1607 and All
That…' runs from June 29th to July 1st and will also
feature a number of events to commemorate the 400th
anniversary of the Flight of the Earls. It will
explore specifically what was going on in Inishowen
at that time in history.
The 2007 programme will feature discussions on Rosa
O' Doherty 1591-1660 who sailed down the Swilly with
the Earls in 1607 and her brother Cahir Rua who
staged a rebellion in 1608.
Renowned Derry academic and novelist, Seamus Deane
will give the opening lecture on Clonmany's famous
son, John Toland 1670-1722 while Inishowen's DNA and
its future development within Ireland and Europe
will be the subjects of special analysis.
The weekend of events will also include three field
trips, two major exhibitions, musical sessions,
children's programmes, and a 'Big Night' on Sunday,
July 1st.
