Pay and Display protest in Buncrana 10.12.07

BUNCRANA residents will stage a demonstration outside the town council offices later this week in protest at the controversial Pay and Display parking charges.
The decision was taken following a meeting of a number of residents' groups in the town. They are inviting others to join them for their protest on Wednesday, December 12, at 7pm, ahead of the monthly meeting of the local authority.
A parking meter at Walkers' Lane, Buncrana. "Our demands are very simple," said the residents' spokesperson, James Quigley.
"We are asking for free parking for residents including their families and friends in their own residential areas. At present we understand that only a resident with a car registered to themselves at their address are eligible for a permit which can only be used for that registered car and has to be applied for on a yearly basis.
"We believe it should not matter whether a resident has a car or not, if you are a resident then you should be entitled to
a permit which entitles you to free parking for yourself, your family and your friends."
The protesters believe local residents, especially the elderly and disabled, are being penalised by the new charges.
"We are very annoyed at our elected representatives. They never consulted us in the first place and even after being made aware of our feelings have still not come to ask us our opinions. We must point out, however, that Cllr. Philip Diggin has helped us as much as he could and we thank him for all his help and thoughtfulness.
"You would think that residents, some of whom are here for generations, would merit a letter explaining the intended plans. We are bewildered that the councillors passed such a motion and would like to ask them, are they our representatives or the 'yes' people of county planners?" added Mr. Quigley.
