Santa opens shop in Buncrana
24.03.07
Don’t let the children
hear…but Santa has opened a shop in Buncrana.
No, there’s no need to check your calendar.
The Santa in question is Santa Selegovics, a Latvian
woman who has opened Inishowen’s first specialist
Eastern European food store with her husband
Gunthars.
They run Baltic Food at Ardaravan Square, Buncrana,
aimed at Inishowen’s estimated 1,200 Eastern
Europeans. |
“We sell Polish,
Latvian, Lithuanian, Romanian, Estonian and German
food,” explained Gunthars, who sources his products
through five wholesalers in Dublin. “Our most
popular foods are cheeses, meat and bread from these
countries.” They get their bread from a Polish baker
in Drogheda. |

The Selegovics opened
their spacious shop after a two-month stint selling
from a van on the town’s Main Street. They open at
the relatively later time of Midday until 9pm to
accommodate their customers who work during the day.
“It can be quiet sometimes, but business is okay,”
says Santa. |
