A TOTAL of 98 cases of
prostate cancer were diagnosed in Donegal in 2005,
latest figures show.
The statistics were released ahead of a free public
meeting in Letterkenny, on Tuesday, September 18th,
for all men in the county concerned about or
affected by the disease.
Action Prostate Cancer, a programme by the Irish
Cancer Society, will host the meeting, at which
speakers will include a prostate cancer survivor; Dr
Eamonn Rogers, consultant urologist, University
College Hospital, Galway; Dr Osama Salib, consultant
oncologist, St. Luke’s, Dublin; Mr Sean Diver,
urology clinical nurse specialist, Letterkenny
General Hospital and Sonya Bowen, prostate cancer
information nurse, Action Prostate Cancer.
There will be presentations on diet, risk factors
for developing prostate cancer and screening for
prostate cancer. There will also be presentations on
surgery, radiotherapy and hormone therapy as
treatment options.
Latest data from National Cancer Registry shows that
2406 new cases of prostate cancer were diagnosed in
Ireland in 2005, which means that men now have a 1
in 12 chance of developing cancer in their lifetime.
Action Prostate Cancer incorporates the Prostate
Cancer Information Service which is staffed by
specialist cancer nurses and which provides expert,
support and advice to those affected by prostate
