Sinn Féin has accused Fine Gael of "letting down" thousands of
voters in Donegal.
Cllr Pádraig MacLochlainn, who narrowly failed to
take a seat on March 24th, was referring to outgoing
Green Party leader Trevor Sargent's comments that
his party coalesced with Fianna Fáil because Fine
Gael refused to negotiate with Sinn Féin.
This meant it was not numerically possible to
deliver an alternative administration.
"I think that many thousands of people in Donegal
who recently voted for Fine Gael and for a change of
Government will be alarmed at Trevor Sargent's
revelation," said Cllr. MacLochlainn.
"It is now absolutely clear that Fine Gael
considered it more important to block Sinn Féin from
entering Government than delivering on the change
they had promised the electorate in the recent
election."
The Buncrana-based town and county councillor said
Fine Gael's anti-republicanism was "more important"
that delivering on their promises.
"There was much rhetoric from Fine Gael during the
election about contracts with the people and the
like.
"Now we can see that their anti-republican
perspective is more important to that party than
taking tough decisions and delivering on their
promises.
"When the next election comes, I hope that the
thousands of Donegal voters who voted for Fine Gael
and for a change of Government, remember this
betrayal," he added. |
