Here's Ho, Ho, Hoping for 10,001
Santas
13.11.07
A CHARITY in Inishowen
is Ho, Ho, Hoping for your support in its drive to
recruit 2,500 Santas for a record-breaking attempt
in Derry.
Inishowen Autism Related Education (iCARE) is one of
four charities that stand to get a significant funds
boost if the unique '10,001 Santas' campaign is
successful. The aim is to gather 10,001 men, women
and children, all dressed up as Santa, for a short
sponsored walk of the Derry City Walls on Sunday,
December 9. |
|
The other three chosen
charities are the Foyle Hospice, Macmillan Cancer
Care and Children in Crossfire.
Each stands to get up to £25,000/€35,000 if the
challenge is successful.
iCARE will open a '10,001 Santas' shop in Buncrana
from Monday, November 19, in a bid to get as many
Santas as possible |
signed up. People can
register and collect their Santa suits in the shop
next door to Abrakebabra.
iCARE's Jim Devlin told InishowenNews.com: "We hope
to have at least 2,500 Santas signed up in time for
the challenge. There's only a few weeks left to go,
so we're hoping the shop will significantly help the
recruitment drive. We've had a good response so far
from the local schools and we're hoping that will
continue."
Mr. Devlin said the record-breaking attempt was
particularly important given its cross-border,
cross-community dimension. |
Meanwhile, key
organisations, businesses and individuals from every
sector of the community have been invited to attend
a public presentation in Derry's City Hotel on
Wednesday, November 14, to outline the logistics and
objectives of the challenge.
Aside from raising money and awareness for the four
chosen charities, the key |
|
objectives of the event
are to get Derry into the Guinness Book of Records
as Santa City.
"We want to get into the record books for having the
most Santas in the one place at the same time," said
a spokesperson.
The other aim is to promote a positive message about
Derry city.
"With the Derry Walls as the backdrop to this
spectacular record-breaking attempt, the event has
caught the imagination of many organisations and
individuals within the city and beyond.
"Businesses, schools and families from both sides of
the community have signed up for this momentous
occasion…a positive indication of the more peaceful
times we are now living in. We look forward to
seeing you all there," added the spokesperson. For
