Businesses in
Inishowen have been urged to be on the alert to a
money changing scam.
InishowenNews.com understands that a number of
traders have been hit in recent weeks by thieves who
attempt to distract and confuse shopkeepers by
asking them to change large denomination notes into
smaller ones.
"For example, a trader might be approached with four
€100 bills and asked to change them into €50 notes.
Then they're asked to change these notes into €20s
and with all the distraction and confusion, some of
the €50 notes are retained," said a Garda
spokesperson.
Two shops in recent weeks were also targeted when
thieves caused a distraction on the premises before
making off with a number of counter-top charity
boxes.
It is understood the people involved in the scam are
from the non-national gypsy community.
