Children from St.
Colmcille's National School, Greencastle, will take a trip to
Derry Port this week to learn more about local
maritime history.
“Derry and Greencastle have been linked by the Foyle
down through the centuries, and it’s important that
children learn about these links,” said Derry
harbour master Bill McCann, who is hosting the
visit.
“These links survive to the present day, with the
Foyle Pilot Station – which serves ships coming up
the Foyle into the port – situated right across the
road from their school."
St. Colmcille principal, Annie McCartney added: “The
children see these ships passing and are interested
in learning where they come from.
“They will find out what the ships are carrying and
how far such ships travel to come past their village
into Derry."
Captain McCann, who is from the Greencastle area,
will tell the children all about the ships’ cargoes
and journeys, showing them where each of the
products come from. He will also talk to them about
the history of Derry Port and give them a guided
tour to let them see the cranes and tugs at work.
