MORE than 1,500
drums of drinking water were recently withdrawn from
the SuperValu supermarket in Buncrana,
InishowenNews.com can reveal.
The company has confirmed that some batches of
SuperValu’s own-brand five-litre bottled water were
recently taken off the shelves as a result of
“naturally occurring iron precipitation”.
A spokesperson said: “Five production batches of
SuperValu's own brand five litre bottled water were
recently withdrawn from stores across the country
due to naturally present iron precipitation.
“Although iron in drinking water is not a health
concern, the decision was taken to remove all
affected products from stores.”
SuperValu is part of the franchise division of the
Musgrave Group, the largest food distributor in
Ireland. All SuperValu stores and regional managers
were notified and the five batches were replaced
with “unaffected product”.
The supplier of the water, Glenpatrick Spring, has
now put in place procedures to eliminate the
possibility of such an incident recurring.
SuperValu's own brand five litre bottled water is
currently retailing at a discounted price as part of
a “scheduled price promotion”.
“SuperValu regularly offers consumers hundreds of
promotions every week as part of its commitment to
low prices. Iron precipitation is caused by
naturally occurring deposits in the well where the
water is sourced,” added the spokesperson.
“We take all issues of quality extremely seriously
and place a high value on delivering quality
products to our customers across the country
everyday.
SuperValu in Buncrana had received ten pallets of
the affected product with each pallet containing 162
five-litre bottles.
