Going for gold in Buncrana...

THE Buncrana Tidy Towns
group is calling on the town's growing European
population including Latvians, Polish and
Lithuanians to become involved in the effort to win
gold next year for the seaside town.
The committee will hold its AGM on Monday, December
10 when a major drive to greatly improve the town's
rankings in the national Tidy Towns competition will
begin. |

Quigley told InishowenNews.com a gold medal was
attainable if everyone in the community gets on
board.
"Over the past few years Buncrana's marks in the
competition have remained steady," he explained.
"However, we would like to see an improvement and
this can be |
achieved with just a
little more effort.
"Ultimately our goal would be to win but this can
only be realised when more voluntary workers come on
board. It is essential also to have a dynamic
committee who are well organised and who can develop
a plan which is achievable and one which has
long-term goals."
Mr. Quigley also appealed to the non-national
community and returning expats to get on board.
"We have quite a considerable number of mainland
Europeans in the town. Polish, Lithuanian, Latvian,
Czech Republic and many more nationalities from all
around the world are part of our community now. It
would be great to have any of them come along.
"Over the past ten years or so, many people have
returned to Buncrana from England and Scotland not
just because work is more plentiful but because of
our unique location.
"Our returned exiles can now add to the natural
beauty that they have missed by getting involved in
improving the look of the town."
Buncrana received 259 marks this year - the best
mark in the county in category D. The breakdown
included overall development approach, 39 out 50;
built environment, 38/50; landscaping, 40/50;
wildlife and natural amenities 35/50; litter control
24/50; waste minimisation 8/20; tidiness 30/40;
residential areas 26/40; roads, streets and back
areas 27/50 and general impression 8/10. Landscaping
came in for particular praise which is a reflection
on town gardener George McDermott and his team.
"Two unsung heroes also deserve a mention, namely
Joe McCauley and Martin Duffy who have worked all
year to keep Buncrana tidy. They also are in the
process of building a stone wall and path at Swan's
Park," added Mr. Quigley. The outgoing committee are
chairperson Rena Donaghey; assistant chairperson
Liam Rainey; secretary Siobhan King; assistant
secretary Maud Rainey; treasurer Rosemary Dunne;
assistant treasurer Philip Diggin; PRO Columba
Quigley; project manager Carl King; assistant Jason
Porter and garden contest organiser Patricia
Gallagher.
The committee invite all members of the community to
their AGM to will be held in The Lake of Shadows
Hotel, Buncrana, on Monday, December10 at 7.30pm. |
