Top EU body urged to visit Donegal 23.03.07

DONEGAL Sinn Fein is to urge the Regional Development Committee of the European Parliament to visit the county later this year. Cllr. Padraig MacLochlainn welcomed the committee’s decision to visit Ireland in September but said it needed to see, first hand, Donegal’s economic disadvantage.
"Given the extent to which Donegal has suffered from partition, it makes sense that we should benefit from every opportunity available to tackle that legacy and to develop Donegal. Europe clearly has an important role to play in all of that,” said the Donegal North East election candidate.
The Regional Development Committee, whose members include Sinn Fein MEP Bairbre de Brun, has responsibility for assessing proposals in relation to structural funds, European regional policy and relations with local and regional authorities.
"In recent months, Sinn Féin has spearheaded several important initiatives at European level, including an intensive, high-level delegation last December which brought over 20 business, community and political activists from across the North West to the decision-making heart of Brussels,” said Cllr. MacLochlainn.
"At present, the Regional Development Committee's programme for the visit to Ireland has yet to be finalised. Sinn Fein would hope the committee could engage with local community projects and initiatives, as well as regional political, economic and community representatives.”
